The basic properties of anthracene

Physical properties
white flake crystals with light blue fluorescence or light yellow needles.
(Pure white with purple fluorescence)

The relative density of 1.25 (27 ℃), 1.283 (25 ℃), the melting point of 217, the boiling point of 342, the flash point of 196.1,121.1 (closed) (above are ℃), steam pressure 0.13kPa / 145 ℃

Insoluble in water, insoluble in ethanol and ether, more soluble in hot benzene.

Uses

Used as a luminescent material (as in a scintillation counter), especially for coatings (eg for absorbing ultraviolet light).

Used in the manufacture of anthraquinone and dyes. Also used as pesticides, fungicides, gasoline and other coagulant.



Preparation or source

 obtained in the final stage of the distillation of coal tar, which can be separated from the anthracene oil portion of the coal tar.
